ML: Where did the idea for these ‘Elevated Excursions’ come from?
KH: Last August, we arranged a group day trip for our clients to the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. We were greeted by a fleet of Rolls Royces at the jet when we landed and then took the scenic 17-Mile Drive to the Rolls Royce Villa. A short while later our guests were driving Lamborghini Huracans and Aventadors through the hills behind Quail Lodge. We realized that with all the incredible partnerships we've spent years building, combined with the convenient fact that we have a fleet of private jets available at any moment, we had the ability to create very special experiences.
ML: How often are these trips offered?
KH: We are doing six excursions this year. Some are based around set events, for example the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, while others we can create around a client’s schedule such as the trip to La Paz or Napa Valley. We limit each excursion to 10 to 12 guests to maintain the quality of the experience.
ML: Who are you working with to create the trips?
KH: We choose partners with a high level of prestige that we believe are the best at what the do and will add something meaningful or provide the greatest access—companies like Scott Dunn Private Journeys, O’Gara Coach, Meritage Wine Market, The Gray Group, Malibu Rocky Oaks, and Rolls-Royce North America.
ML: When you say great access, what are some examples?
KH: Our Napa day trip is so well thought out, Meritage has called in favors with some very exclusive wineries, and we're putting on a dinner in an actual wine cave. Our Las Vegas excursion, in partnership with the Shops at Crystals, includes breakfast at Tiffany's (literally) and Versace High Tea at the Mandarin Oriental. It would be very difficult on your own to request that Rolls-Royce send a fleet of cars or gain access to the private wineries we are visiting in Napa.
ML: What do you look for in a location to plan an excursion?
KH: We look for destinations within a two-hour flight range—part of the concept is that you can go have this amazing travel experience and sleep in your own bed that same night. Almost anyone can get away for a day, and it really highlights just how much flying private maximizes your time. I gave John Spence, the president of Scott Dunn Private Journeys, the two-hour limitation and asked him to dream up a day trip and he suggested going to La Paz to swim with whale sharks. It’s something you would never imagine could be accomplished in a single day.
