The MARKET Restaurant + Bar chef chats about his local favs.
Carl Schroeder of MARKET Restaurant + Bar

“When you’re around for 10 years, you’d better be doing it right,” says executive chef and proprietor
Carl Schroeder, whose well-respected MARKET Restaurant + Bar (858.523.0007, Del Mar) recently celebrated a decade in business. “You have to do it well. If you’re a local restaurant, there
are only so many ducks on that pond—if those ducks start flying
off, you’re going to have a big,
empty restaurant.” Here, the culinary genius, who appreciates
San Diego for its “access to produce, beaches and [a well-rounded] lifestyle,” lets us in on his favorite haunts in and outside of the city.

Splurge “Recently, I had
a great dinner
at Quince (415.775.8500) in San Francisco—I usually splurge when I’m out of town.”

Happy Hour “We like to grab our bikes, hit the boardwalk, ride up or down the coast and have cocktails along the way.”

Grab Brunch “My brunch go-to is
The Grill at Torrey Pines (La Jolla, 858.777.6641). I sit back in my
chair and pretend I’m on vacation.”

Get Fit “I work out at 24 Hour Fitness (S.D. locations vary). It’s open after service and is a great way to relieve my stress.”

Date Night “My wife and I enjoy Sushi Ota (Mission Bay, 858.270.5670). Sushi is something I don’t ever make and it’s clean and well done here.”
