Clase Azul México just released a limited edition tequila and only 6,500 decanters are available worldwide.
Retailing for $1,050, Clase Azul Tequila Día de Muertos Colores marks the Mexican luxury spirit brand’s second installment of Nuestros Recuerdos. The limited edition annual series honors Día de Los Muertos, which celebrates the memory of loved ones who have passed with traditions like savory foods, illuminating displays of color and enticing scents.
Nuestros Recuerdos first kicked off in 2021 with Sabores, which was limited to 5,000 decanters.
“Día de Muertos is one of the most important celebrations in Mexican culture. It’s a time of remembrance and gathering, so creating a decanter that embodies so much meaning and nuance is no easy feat,” said Clase Azul Creative Director Miguel Hernández. “This year’s edition, Colores (“Colors”), has left me with a deep sense of pride in my team for conveying what this holiday represents and the role that colors play in it for so many.”
Honing in on the holiday’s inherent vibrancy, the one-liter decanter is inspired by calaveritas de azúcar (small sugar skulls), which are typically featured on ofrendas alongside marigold flowers, sweets, candles and papel picado. The Colores bottle is made of a white-glaze exterior and has an illustration on the base that nods to Día de Los Muertos decorations.
Perhaps the most impressive element of the decanter, each features a multi-colored ornament inspired by calaveritas and handmade by Mexican artisans. A single one takes about 12 days to complete.
What’s more, the añejo tequila itself is also inspired by calaveritas. Aged for 28 months, the process began in American whiskey casks for 22 months before finishing in artisanal rum casks from the island of Martinique. The final product results in notes of crystallized orange peel, clove, walnut and cacao.
“With this edition we remember, as we do every year, all of our loved ones who are no longer with us,” said master distiller Viridiana Tinoco. “So, inspired by the calaveritas created as tokens of their memory, I wanted to craft this tequila through a double aging in casks of American whiskey and a fine finish in rum casks from the island of Martinique which naturally impart a hint of sweetness to the tequila.”
