SUSHI TAISHO
Carlsbad locals may already be familiar with the restaurant Sushi Taisho, located in Carlsbad Village, but it’s not the same sushi spot of yesteryear. Having undergone a makeover under new ownership— chef Brian Yoon and his wife, restaurateur Misun Yoon—the updated Sushi Taisho offers a remodeled interior, a sprawling outdoor patio and debut Asian-fusion fare. Sip sake or a soju-based cocktail paired with classic sushi plates or fresh Japanese creations. Highlights include the Hello-tail carpaccio— thinly sliced yellowtail topped with jalapeno, Sriracha, ponzu and masago—chicken katsu and Japanese curry. 760.994.0095, sushitaisho.com

Created by Jeffrey Mastro and Michael Mastro—the founding family behind Mastro’s Steakhouse and Mastro’s Ocean Club—the new Steak 48 will offer the best in prime beef, domestic wagyu and A5 cuts, teamed with impeccable seafood offerings. Located in Del Mar Highlands Town Center, the upscale steakhouse features innovative takes on classic dishes, including Maine lobster escargot, wagyu tartare with deviled egg mousse, and Alaskan king crab and rock shrimp mac and cheese. “My family and I have always loved San Diego, especially Del Mar,” shares Jeffrey. “We are excited to have the opportunity to be a small part of this great community, and look forward to expanding our roots in Del Mar.” steak48.com
KNVS
Art and food collide at KNVS, a new art gallery-meets-restaurant and bar from Kevin Shin. Located in Oceanside on The Fin Hotel campus, the concept introduces new art exhibits, which co-chefs Michael Mitchem and Matthew Monko draw upon for their seasonal menus. The inaugural display, The Floral Guild by local artist Margaret Alexis Chiaro, features a collection of works that capture the light and dark contrasts between the feminine and masculine. Complementary menu items include a vegan ratatouille bouquet and a berry-cured salmon paired with cocktails that are florally inspired. The Love Bush spices things up with Jamaican rum, lime, bell pepper and chartreuse while the Iris ushers in fall flavors with rye, cognac, apple, lemon, black pepper and charcoal. Taste the debut menu through the end of October. 442.655.9851, knvs.bar
MADI
Say hello to Madi, the little sister concept of San Diego’s award-winning Madison on Park. Tucked within Normal Heights, the new brunch spot is open daily from 8AM to 2PM, dishing out an all-day breakfast menu by third-generation restaurateur Matthew Sieve and chef Tomas Felix. Pull up a seat in the retro-cool space, designed by Dave and Anna Sindelar of Archisects, and dig in to whimsical fare like blackberry and goat cheese pancakes, skirt steak Benedict and stuffed Madi breakfast tacos. Mango mint or white peach and basil mimosas add interest to the beverage menu while lunch plates—such as Mediterranean lettuce wraps—offer tastes for diners of every palate. 619.915.5522, brunchlikemadi.com
