Balboa Park in bloom
The Bash atmosphere was breathtaking.
The Party
SDMA’s annual gala, Bloom Bash, definitely passed the sniff test, thanks to this year’s floral designer, Carlos Franco of San Diego’s Green Fresh Florals. He decked out the rotunda with fragrant hanging jasmine and billowing bougainvillea, not to mention 3,000 roses and 5,000 mums, along with citrus and palm trees. Talk about flower power!
The People
Hats off to co-chairs Valerie Cooper and Lee Clark. Throughout the perennially festive Art Alive weekend, the museum raised $975,000 to help support special exhibits, as well as bolster conservation and youth education programs.
Best In Show
Guests nibbled on bites from S.D. culinary faves like Cafe Chloe and Great Maple. And forget selfies—dolled- up patrons got their pics taken in the PatrĂ³n photo booth (“Say ‘tequila!’”) for an evening keepsake. The Sculpture Garden was another stunner of the night. There, Tapigami artist Danny Scheible created an installation that was avant- garde meets Anthropologie. The halls were transformed with floral archways, globes artfully covered in masking tape and a vibrant wall of hangers covered in fabric. As crowds lingered late into the night, we had a hunch everyone wanted to spend the night at the museum. -Photography by Tim Hardy, shotbyhardy.com
