I’ve always had a soft spot for September issues. It takes me back to the days when fall fashion issues were hundreds of pages long and we would all marvel at the sheer weight of them. (I once used a stack of fat Italian Vogues as a stepping stool well into the winter, but that’s another story.) Not that I miss those days—have you ever tried lugging a 700-page magazine around?
However, for our September issue, we go beyond seasonal trends and runway shows and look to the stylemakers in our own city. We’ve chosen four ladies for our annual Women of Style feature—Paola Alberdi, Jenny Livits, Jillian Sassone and Linda Waisbord—and not only does each one have an incredible sense of personal style, but they are also successful businesswomen who are helping mold the city’s fashion landscape. And if these ladies’ thriving careers are anything to go by, San Diego’s fashion cred is definitely on the rise.
Before I go any further, I want to say a special thank you to The Park, Bankers Hill by Zephyr for allowing us to use the incredible property as our backdrop for the Women of Style photo shoot—it is still one of my favorite residential high-rises in San Diego, and when you see the images, you will certainly understand why.
Admittedly, we are showing the ladies a lot of love in this issue, but a few men made it into this month’s pages too. There were criteria, though: For one, they had to be exceptional enough to appear next to our showstopping ladies—and we were not disappointed with who we uncovered. Among them are Hollywood mainstay, director and producer Steven Soderbergh, who made the cut with the launch of his new spirit, Singani 63 (now being poured in upscale eateries around town); and star-on-the-rise Ben Chase, who plays Mercutio in The Old Globe’s production of Romeo and Juliet. This month also marks the debut of the Netflix political thriller The Last Thing He Wanted, in which Chase plays opposite Anne Hathaway and Ben Affleck. You heard it here first: He’s definitely one to watch.
If you can believe it, this issue marks my one-year anniversary with Modern Luxury (cue the confetti!), and what an incredible year it has been. Thank you to everyone who has helped me put these issues together, and here’s to another incredible 12 months!
