Jackson Warren Interiors transformed a dark craftsman in Solana Beach into a light and bright haven for a young family from the East Coast. Step inside.

“We incorporated a built-in banquette into the existing breakfast nook, which allowed for more seating and a larger dining table,” says designer Kiley Jackson of the eat-in kitchen.

When a Brooklyn-based couple decided to trade their East Coast address for a fresh start in Solana Beach, they tapped Aileen Warren and Kiley Jackson of Jackson Warren Interiors (jacksonwarreninteriors.com) to spruce up their new space. “The wife is an old friend of mine from our college days at Tulane University,” says Warren. “We were beyond thrilled to take on a West Coast project, especially for this very fun and stylish young family.” Designed in 2007 by Bokal & Sneed Architects (bokalandsneed.com), the roughly 4,489-square-foot home was ready for a remodel. “The architecture is traditional craftsman, but the initial design and layout was for a pair of empty nesters, so it didn’t quite work for our clients and their young children,” says Jackson, who brought Bokal & Sneed back for the refresh that kicked off in 2019 and was completed in 2020. “They desired a more open kitchen and family area, needed to add a fourth bedroom and an office, and wanted an airy interior that evoked coastal New England, where the wife is originally from.”
A peek at the husband’s prized wine collection can be seen through the glass walls of the wine room.
“We listened to our client and her desire to evoke the New England feel of her upbringing. Her favorite color is blue, which is the primary color used throughout the home,” shares Warren. “In selecting fabrics, we played with texture and pattern and tone-on-tone color palettes.” Adds Jackson, “We wanted to keep the feel of the interior neutral and minimalistic, enhancing the gorgeous ocean views rather than detracting from them, while at the same time maintaining a slight East Coast edginess through the integration of iron finishes. The black and white marble flooring in the laundry/mud room harkens back to the historic Brooklyn brownstone they once called home.” An outdoor spa pool was added to also embrace the home’s seaside locale, and a glass-walled wine room was installed to showcase the husband’s beloved collection.
Outdoor dining takes place around a Janus et Cie dining table.
“The primary design challenge was reorganizing the downstairs floor plan to create a more open flow that was oriented toward the incredible view while at the same time adding in spaces that the client desired, such as a large eat-in kitchen island, walk-in pantry, wet bar, wine room and the desk area that is located just off the garage entrance,” notes Jackson. “An additional design challenge was taking what was once a craftsman home with dark finishes and turning it into something that felt brighter, youthful and more reflective of our clients’ personal taste.” The primary bedroom’s layout was repositioned toward the ocean, and additional windows were added to further enhance the space’s light. “We wanted the primary suite to be a serene escape for our clients and the hustle and bustle of their lives, so we kept the color palette somewhat neutral,” says Warren, who painted the walls in Benjamin Moore’s Grey Owl, brought in swivel chairs to easily face the ocean view, and outfitted the fourposter iron canopy bed in custom Leontine Linens bedding. The kitchen and family room space was also opened up for function and style. Highlights include a walk-in pantry, wet bar for entertaining, the bonus wine room and a built-in banquette that’s ideal for family gatherings. “The family room sliding doors open to the outdoor dining area, allowing for a seamless transition,” adds Jackson. “The teak dining table and chairs are from Janus et Cie and the cushions are upholstered in a Perennials fabric. A lantern from The Urban Electric Company hangs above.”
Hues of blue continue throughout the home’s four bedrooms.
“The home went from a dark craftsman whose floor plan didn’t work for our clients and their young family to a fresh open plan with plenty of spaces to gather as a group,” says Jackson. “Our clients are so happy with the finished product, and we are gearing up for another renovation with them on their family cabin in Lake Arrowhead!” reveals Warren. “We can’t wait to take on another California project.”
