Jason Oppenheim, president and founder of The Oppenheim Group and star of Netflix’s Selling Sunset and Selling the OC, discusses his new La Jolla office and approach to growing his brokerage.
“My ultimate goal is to be able to service Southern California,” says Jason Oppenheim, president and founder of real estate brokerage The Oppenheim Group (ogroup.com)—which was given a public stage when Netflix debuted reality series Selling Sunset in 2019. “To really be an elite luxury brokerage focused on Southern California, where I think you really need to be is Los Angeles, Newport Beach— essentially for Orange County— and the San Diego area.”
For his offices, Oppenheim targeted the most exclusive parts of those locations. “What’s most on brand for me was being on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, and then being on the PCH in Corona del Mar,” he says. With the opening of his second office came a second Netflix series, Selling the OC, which premiered in 2022; and a third office in Cabo San Lucas followed. “And then I drove around San Diego for a while and talked to a lot of people, and it became apparent that La Jolla was probably the best spot for a luxury boutique brokerage.” Specifically, he liked Girard Avenue and Prospect Street for their eateries, shops and walkability. “So I just waited for there to be a unique opportunity to get something right on that corner, and when it came up, I wrote an offer.”
After receiving a makeover, the stunning new 3,000-square-foot office space in the heart of La Jolla will open its doors in March. “We’re going to have a bar and a pool table and a living room,” says Oppenheim, who’s moving the desks and living room furniture from the L.A. office. “So it’ll be the furniture that’s been on Selling Sunset.” The new digs will also receive some airtime: “We don’t have plans right now for its own show, but it looks like it will be covered on either Selling Sunset or Selling the OC.” Both shows have been picked up for two more seasons.
With so many clients looking to move south, Oppenheim already has several listings in the $5 million to $15 million range. He recently hired two more agents (out of 150 applicants), but he’s not looking to “expand for the sole purpose of expanding—just the same way we don’t take listings that are overpriced,” he explains. “I think you generally start diluting your ability to focus the more that you expand geographically, so that’s why we’re trying to stay focused on Southern California.” Instead, he wants his team to feel like a family. “We’re really not trying to play the numbers game,” he says. “We’re trying to play the quality game.”
