Louis Vuitton will show its 2023 Cruise collection at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California on May 12, 2022.
“Having spent a lot of time in California, I was drawn to the idea of showing there again. The Salk Institute has been a place of wonder for me over the years and Louis Kahn’s stunning Brutalist architecture against this extraordinary setting of the Pacific Ocean and the California sunset provides me with endless inspiration. It also celebrates intelligence, knowledge and the belief in the power of science,” says Ghesquière in a press release.
The Salk Institute has long been an inspiration to Nicolas Ghesquière, artistic director of women’s collections at Louis Vuitton, for its architectural significance and the history of innovations the space has. It was also the site of Louis Vuitton’s 2019 travel campaign and an issue of their brand magazine, LV Book #10 - The California Issue.

This will be the first time a fashion show has been held at the Salk Institute. By using the entire institute, about 410,000 square feet are available for Louis Vuitton’s inevitably over-the-top runway show.
The institute was designed by architect Louis Kahn in collaboration with Dr. Jonas Salk, who is credited with developing the first safe and effective polio vaccine. When the space isn’t holding fashion shows, it’s used for research on aging, neuroscience, climate change, and a variety of other scientific topics.
The luxury Maison adds this show to its growing list of international cruise collection shows. In 2019, the show was staged at the TWA Flight Center by Eero Saarinen at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. Prior to that, the show was held at the Miho Museum, designed by l.M. Pei, in Japan and the MAC by Oscar Niemeyer in Brazil.
“Louis Vuitton has a long and valued relationship with the US, dating back to the Chicago World Fair of 1893. Since then, our presence has expanded across the country, and notably California. A spectacular feat of architectural design, enhanced by the surrounding landscape, the Salk Institute is a fitting choice for this year’s Cruise show,” says Michael Burke, CEO and Chairman of Louis Vuitton, in a press release.
The Louis Vuitton Cruise Collection 2022 can be live streamed on May 12 on louisvuitton.com or on Louis Vuitton’s social media channels.
