The Party
Fueled by Downton Abbey mania, KPBS—S.D.’s public radio and TV station that airs the hit British period drama—encouraged attendees to make like lords and ladies and dress in glitzy ’20s attire for its annual gala.
The Scene
S.D.’s own turn-of-the-century icon, the US Grant, was a fitting setting for the evening’s festivities. Beaded gowns sparkled under the chandeliers as guests quaffed the evening’s signature Champagne cocktail, dubbed Her Ladyship. With the gala held just one week after the debut of Downton’s fourth season, the room was abuzz with chatter over the fates of the fictional Crawleys and their slew of downstairs attendants. Adding to the intrigue, actors Laura Carmichael and Lesley Nicol, who play Lady Edith and Mrs. Patmore respectively, were the evening’s special guests. The glam duo nearly upstaged the evening’s honorees—among them SDSU President Emeritus Dr. Stephen Weber—being inducted into the KPBS Hall of Fame.
The Highlights
An opera singer’s rendition of the instantly recognizable Downton Abbey theme music left the audience dumbstruck: Who knew it had lyrics? Equally astonishing was the $130,000 raised in support of KPBS programming. Cheerio!
