Craft beer breweries around San Diego (who are members of the Guild) will host guests for Beer Weekend. Each participating brewery will feature an exclusive hop blend named Zamba in one of their craft beers, however, they choose to use it. The unique hop was created through the “SD Beer Blend” collaboration between the Brewers Guild and Brewers Supply Group.
“The Zamba blend was designed as a late kettle or dry hop for classic West Coast-inspired IPAs by showcasing notes of tropical fruit, tangerine and stone fruit. Its strong tropical fruit expression also makes it well-suited to hazy or juicy IPAs, but is flexible and bright enough to be an addition to any summer beer,” says the press release for Beer Weekend.
In honor of the festivities, participating breweries will sell a limited edition commemorative pint glass to mark the special anniversary. Check out the full list of participating breweries here and sort by the features that are most important to you (i.e: Are dogs allowed? Can they refill my growler?).
Beer Weekend promises a hops-filled experience and a large variety of craft beers unique to San Diego. A portion of the proceeds from each Zamba creation and pint glass sold will be donated to the Guild and its members-only programs, dedicated to preserving craft brewing in SD.
“We simply couldn’t wait for Beer Week to celebrate such an important milestone for the Guild, its more than 150 members, and, frankly, all of San Diego,” said Executive Director of the San Diego Brewers Guild Paige McWey Acers. “We are named ‘The Capital of Craft’ for a reason and singling out this commemoration is yet another way to promote so many wonderful breweries and help get beer lovers back through their doors as we re-emerge from the
The number of craft breweries in San Diego has grown expeditiously. In 1997 there were just 15 breweries in San Diego. The local industry has grown exponentially and now, in 2022, there are about 150 craft breweries in the area. In 2018, the industry contributed $480 million to $590 million to the San Diego economy. The pandemic caused an obvious economic dip for the past two years, but the Guild is hopeful events like Beer Weekend and their forthcoming Beer Week will get San Diegans back to the area’s craft breweries.
San Diego Beer Week will return for its 14th year from Friday, Nov. 4 to Sunday, Nov. 13. Learn more about the San Diego Brewers Guild via their website.
