LJ Playhouse celebrates the return of Des McAnuff THE PARTY For its third Spotlight Dinner, the La Jolla Playhouse produced an onstage extravaganza where guests felt like cast members for the evening. THE GUEST OF HONOR Des McAnuff was back in the house! The LJP director emeritus is the current artistic director of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, whose production of Jesus Christ Superstar will get a pre-Broadway run in the Mandell Weiss Theatre through Dec. 31. Bravo! THE SCENE S.D. European decked out the Playhouse exterior with Aston Martins and Jags. Inside, the stunning stage was set with costumes from past Playhouse productions, including The Wiz, Tartuffe and other McAnuff-directed shows. For dinner, vintage tables, courtesy of Pow Wow, were adorned with dramatic floral displays by Botanica. THE HIGHLIGHT Guests enjoyed a gourmet feast by Campine: A Culinary + Cocktail Conspiracy, served with crafty libations by Snake Oil Cocktail Company. But the real treat came via video message from the Jesus Christ Superstar cast to McAnuff. Photography by Jeff Corrigan
