Shine On

| May 14, 2015 | Parties National

The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego celebrated the first day of spring with The Spring Thing: Heavy Metals at its downtown location.

Co-chairs Salem Ciuffa, Anna Haudenschild, Rita Haudenschild and Jeff Svitak. Other power players included Ben Strauss-Malcolm of Quint Gallery; MCASD board member Jennifer Nelson; and attorney John Dineen, who underwrote the art-making experience of the evening; and MCASD board trustee Sonia Mandelbaum.

Donning metallic attire, hundreds of guests mingled amid the hanging metal sculptures in the exhibit Gravity and Grace: Monumental Works by El Anatsui. Next up, a lavish dinner by visionary chef Andrew Spurgin was served on serpentine tables decked out by Tenfold Style. The VIP afterparty kicked it into high gear, thanks to an exacting mix of temporary tattoos and free-flowing PatrĂ³n cocktails. It was whimsically housed in the museum’s woodshop, providing a behind-the-scenes vibe. The parting gift followed the theme: jewelry fashioned from recycled materials by alumni of San Diego State University’s jewelry and metalworking program. The biggest takeaway, however, was $100,000 raised for MCASD’s exhibitions and educational pursuits. -Photos by Bauman Photography
