In a world where words are sent without much thought and fleeting social media stories fill our feeds, it’s a luxury to subscribe to something worth saving.
Upper East Side interior designer Charlotte Moss cherishes magazines so much, she has her favorite issues leather-bound in encyclopedic form. Sharing in her refusal to part with a lifetime of saved glossies, interior designer Mark D. Sikes built a library with custom shelves to display his most cherished monthlies, while the late great English decorator David Hicks kept publications on file for reference and scrapbooking. His son, Ashley Hicks, also a designer, later turned his father’s collection of clippings into best-selling coffee-table books. But it seems today’s world doesn’t have time to pore over the papers. Pinterest and Instagram have replaced tear sheets, making beautiful magazines even more of a treasure. A sign of the times: This season, brands such as Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, Kartell, AERIN and Hermès have magazine racks in their collections. These living room lovelies resonate with readers who are so proud of their subscriptions, they want to show them off.
