THE PARTY San Diego’s coastal conservationists came out for the Surfrider Foundation’s 12th annual bro-tastic Art Gala fundraiser at Del Mar’s Powerhouse Park. THE SCENE Ocean breezes blew through the trellis-covered veranda, where a who’s who of surfers and activists from across the county showed up to mix, mingle and bid on surf-centric art. Susan Wickstrand’s “Keep Our Oceans Blue” and Cherrie La Porte’s magnificent “Glass Surf Fusion” surfboard were among the colorful works. Artist and surfer Nathan Gibbs created an auction item on the spot: a painting of iconic S.D. surfing spots.THE HIGHLIGHTS Kudos went to two of the foundation’s top volunteers: Jim Jaffee for his longtime work maintaining beach access (think the recent Solana Beach seawall victory) and water reuse pioneer Brook Sarson. BEST IN SHOW The grass-roots organization raised more than $18,000 at the gala and managed to wine and dine with zero-waste catering and on-site composting. Talk about making waves!
