For Hawaii native Kiana Cabell, coconut oil has been an everyday essential since growing up on Honolulu’s shores with her father, surf icon Joey Cabell. “I would use coconut oil for almost everything—from cooking to all things beauty,” says the La Jolla resident, who went on to study at New York’s Natural Gourmet Institute. “I became a certified organic chef to explore [how] coconut benefited the body and became fixated on its topical uses.” Suddenly, she began to notice bloggers and publications everywhere touting the miracle ingredient and knew she was on to something. A move to SoCal later—to attend the University of San Diego—and Cabell’s idea crystalized: “I realized I wanted to create a line of coconut oil-based beauty products.”
By joining forces with S.D. locals—Suja Juice co-founder James Brennan and beauty industry vets Bryce and Gigi Goldman—Cabell made her aha moment come to fruition: Kopari Beauty hit the market in October 2015. “We launched with our Coconut Multitasking line and [people] went nuts for the Kopari Coconut Melt, a do-it-all moisturizing formula,” Cabell recalls. So nuts, in fact, that the brand arrived in Sephora stores nationwide in January 2016. Add to that feat the notable celebrity investors—Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, Hilary Duff, Shay Mitchell and Karlie Kloss—and it’s no surprise the team clocked a cool $5 million in sales in 2016 alone. “Expanding our partners with some of Hollywood’s most respected [names] is a strong indicator of Kopari’s success,” says the soon-to-be mom. “[They] were a great validation that we have created something special.” Next up: the release of additional coconut-based product categories and a new office in La Jolla. Says Cabell: “The warm weather, beautiful beaches and overall lifestyle made [San Diego] the perfect place to launch Kopari.” Onward and upward.
