Women of Style 2018

BY Casey Gillespie and Gillian Flynn | August 28, 2018 | Feature Features National

From effortlessly classic to fearlessly fashion-forward, these San Diego women are taking care of business, one stylish step at a time.

JAN ARNOLD
As co-founder and style director of San Diego-based beauty brand CND, this influencer single-handedly thrust nail art from salons into front rows at fashion shows worldwide.

My power piece is… a custom The Blonds corset made entirely of nail tips polished in ruby red shellac and adorned with matching red Swarovski crystals. It’s a showstopper, but no breathing or eating allowed. The best way to describe my fashion philosophy is... a little rock ’n’ roll, a little punk, a hint of femme with a good shot of boy thrown in. In terms of style, I would never… go classic. My favorite designer of all time is... Comme des Garçons. I feel empowered when I wear… my Rick Owens platform spike-heeled boots paired with my favorite Simone Rocha pearl-rimmed socks. It just makes everything instantly cooler. The most cherished piece in my closet has to be... my collection of silver cuffs given to me by my husband (he’s the best shopper I know!).

FLORENCIA GOMEZ GERBI
The Argentina-born Greenpacha founder effortlessly melds her definitive South American style with California cool.

The best way to describe my fashion philosophy is... authentic. Once I decide what I’ll wear, I own it. I never leave the house without... sunglasses or lipstick. My power piece is… feminine, comfortable heels and a Greenpacha hat for the occasion. The best style advice I ever received was… beauty comes from within. My favorite designers are… I love to wear emerging designers who are doing sustainable and ethical fashion. But I also adore Chloé, Vivienne Westwood, Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen, Isabel Marant and my good friend and local designer Renata Campion. She uses only the best leather from Argentina. My first fashion moment was... when I read the biography of Coco Chanel. It was about then that I decided to explore the idea of creating my own company, Greenpacha, which is all about ethical and sustainable fashion that empowers artisans we work with in Ecuador.

AMY MEIER
With effortless elegance that’s more East Coast than West, this interior designer is subtly refining glamour for a modern era.

The best style advice I ever received was... Intrigue is created by leaving certain things up to the imagination. My favorite designers are... Cecilie Bahnsen, Nicky Zimmermann and Dries Van Noten. When it comes to footwear, I always... invest. Shoes are my thing. I never leave the house without... my earrings on. Usually plain gold hoops. My first fashion moment was… arriving in NYC to attend Parsons School of Design and bearing witness to the industrial side of the fashion industry. It takes so much to create and produce, but from the outside, all you see is that which glitters. I’m currently working on… a contemporary take on a rustic ranch in Jackson Hole, Wyo., a modern high-rise home for an art lover in Palm Beach, Fla., and a historic renovation in Coronado for a family who loves to entertain.

GIGI GOLDMAN
This mother of three and SoCal beauty boss epitomizes the bohemian, clean-living ethos her beauty brand Kopari was built upon.

My power piece is… my ‘mama’ necklace, which was a gift from my kids. It always reminds me to prioritize my family and keep things in perspective. The best style advice I ever received was… know what looks good on your body type. The most cherished piece in my closet has to be… my ostrich cowboy boots. I bought them used in New York about 20 years ago. I have so many great memories in those boots. My ultimate fashion splurge is… fabulous handbags. I recently bought a rose-colored Gucci crossbody bag and I wear it all the time. My first fashion obsession was… When I was in middle school, our local store would call the house to let me know that the new shipment of Esprit arrived. My brothers were like, ‘Who are you?’

KIANA CABELL
The Kopari co-founder and daughter of surfing legend Joey Cabell brings her penchant for natural beauty along with her polished aloha style center stage.

My first fashion moment was… back in 2000 when I was the face of Roxy’s Teenie Wahine line. As far as accessories go, I prefer… layering simple jewelry pieces, and I definitely obsess over sunglasses. My power piece is… my gold Rolex Daytona. In terms of style, I would never… say never because fashion comes in cycles. I have looked at trends and thought, ‘I would never wear or own that,’ and then six years later, there I am rocking it. I never leave the house without… my Kopari Lip Glossy. My favorite designers are… Zimmermann, Ulla Johnson and Isabel Marant. In San Diego, I shop at… Tucci Boutique. My secret fashion weapon is… a crisp, white T-shirt. Although it may seem simple, it is incredibly hard to find one with an amazing fit that wears well.
